Internal Conversations; Forming Patterns Of Thought

Through the years when I was growing up my parents fought constantly over their money and their children. I believe that is the root cause of my desire to not have any kids of my own.

I just could not for the life of me imagine ever having children of my own. When friends would tell me they were expecting a baby, I’d always reply, ‘on purpose?’.

Back in March of 2000, after returning from a seminar tour in Sydney, my life began to change. The wife informed me that 11 out of the 11 pregnancy tests she had purchased while running around town had come up positive. A baby was on the way.

She was scared to death knowing how I felt. As the months went on, I had to struggle with the concept that I was going to become a father.

After my wife saw this, she asked my friend, Scott Kelby, to explain to me his terrific experience with being a father. Scott is a great friend, my first art director, and a man I have learned much about life from during our years of friendship. It was during this period of my life that I was instructing Scott on the finer points of kick boxing.

Our typical cool down after the workouts was a nice walk. I came to realize how wonderful fatherhood would be while on one such walk. He completely changed how I approached the idea of having children.

Scott helped me overcome the negative and adolescent self-talk that had me convinced that children would be too burdensome on my time and finances.
