Losing weight and keeping it off is often a hard process; subsequently, most overweight people are always searching for easy ways to lose weight. The Cabbage Soup weight loss plan is known to many dieters as a popular “fad diet” that offers a rapid way to lose excess weight, but does it actually work? The Cabbage Soup diet calls for, as the name suggests, eating cabbage soup for a seven day period. During this seven day period, dieters only consume low calorie cabbage soup and a few other specific foods for weight loss. Some dieters enjoy adding spicy flavorings to liven up the soup. Other dieters monitoring their sodium intake try to prepare a low-sodium version of the recipe. Many popular versions of the diet incorporate sources of protein to make the eating program more satisfying.

Besides the soup, there are highly specific guidelines for which additional foods are permitted on each day of the plan. As a general guide, dieters may eat cabbage soup every day, along with fruit on the first day, vegetables on the second day, fruit and vegetables on day three, skim milk and bananas on the fourth day, tomatoes and beef on the fifth day, beef and vegetables on day six, and vegetables, brown rice, and fruit juice on the seventh, final day. Dieters then revert to normal eating habits, hopefully now weighing a few pounds less.

Does the Cabbage Soup diet truly work? Although no official scientific study has studied the diet conclusively, people who have used the weight loss diet report varying results. For several dieters, the plan resulted in weight loss (up to ten pounds), but only for a short while, as the pounds gradually came back as the person returned to normal meal plans. Some dieters complain of light-headedness, weakness, and lack of focus while on the diet. Other dieters experienced no effects at all, experiencing no illness, but no weight loss either.

The Cabbage Soup diet program is only one of countless “fad diets” that dieters can use. Unfortunately, because this diet may not be effective for everyone, for many overweight people it just adds to the difficulty of being unable to lose weight. A better method of dieting does not depend on fad diets or temporary dieting techniques. It takes dedicated work and long-term health commitments to maintain a healthy permanent weight. This means eating right and getting plenty of exercise.
